Our November 2007 speaker will be Harlan A. Freilicher.

We love our parrots.  We take care of them. We rejoice in the fact that many parrot species have such long lifespans, because we can't stand the thought of losing our little winged friends.  But it's important to remember that their long lifespan means a companion that will be around for the bad times, as well as the good.  The bond goes both ways, and it's very traumatic for our birds if something happens to their big wingless buddies. The difference is, our birds also rely on us to take care of them.

In his talk, "Proper Prior Planning Protects Your Pet Parrot", Harlan A. Freilicher will speak on planning ahead to make sure that your parrot is taken care of in the event of you becoming sick, injured, or disabled, or in the event that your parrot outlives you.  He will address matters ranging from making sure you've chosen the right person to take care of your bird, to making sure that your wishes are followed under a legal system that views pets as property rather than as family members, to ways of keeping close to your bird in the event that you need long-term care. Whatever your age or the age of your bird, and whether your bird has a life expectancy of a century or a couple of years, we all owe it to our birds to plan ahead for both the unexpected and the inevitable.
